When transforming a short story into a play, particular aspects of the "story" itself might be left out. Short stores are designed to be read and considered by a solitary reader who can imagine the events being described. A play, however, is designed to be performed on stage, live, in front of an audience. A play, by virtue of its structure, cannot offer all of the details that a short story can, especially in terms of internal narration, and a variety of different settings and locations.
