to put japanese americans or people with japanese ancestry who lived on the west coast into concentration camps.
Executive Order 9066 dealt with putting Japanese American citizens into internment camps.
This executive order came shortly after the Japanese military attacked the US military base at Pearl Harbor. President Franklin D. Roosevelt felt that the internment of these citizens was necessary to ensure safety within American socities. The fear of espionage and spies from Japan being in the US were the greatest factors behind this action. However, many of the citizens put into these camps were native born American citizens who had never been to Japan. This resulted in significant controversy over whether or not the internment of these citizens was constitutional or unconstitutional.
