Patience
It was the night before his birthday,
And all through the house
He looked for tiny presents
Hiding like a mouse.

It was the night before his birthday,
And the light was on.
He stumbled into the kitchen,
And saw his dad and mom.

It was the night before his birthday—
He hid behind the door.
It was past his bedtime,
But he wanted to explore.

It was the night before his birthday—
"How fast he's grown," Dad said.
"Our baby is a big boy now.
He knows what's hidden under the bed."

It was the night before his birthday,
And he hurried to his room
To look underneath his bed
But just to find a broom.

It was the night before his birthday,
And he had understood—
His parents wanted him to wait
So he did, like a good boy should.
