Mathematically, logₓ (y)  is the number to which you raise 'x' in order to get 'y'.

Since 
logarithm to base 10 (that is, x = 10) is the common logarithm,
log (y) is same as log
₁₀ (y).

Therefore, log (y) is the number to which you raise 10 in order to get 'y'.
