Ideology is what political parties are founded and based upon. Their members create campaigns that are centered on the ideologies of the political party. Ideologies, like everything, change over time. Political parties adopt and let go of ideologies that no longer fit their goals. This shift in ideology can lead parties to switch stances on various issues. That switch can change the colors on political maps. For example, the South was once solidly blue with the Democrats. However, as the democratic party and their ideologies shifted, this caused the south to go from blue to Republican red.
