What was the relationship between chinese communist nationalists and japanese?

During the Sino-Japanese War and World War 2 it would be hostile and at war. Because the Japanese Imperial Forces invaded China during that time and fighting against the Chinese. Also the Japanese committed a lot of atrocities to the Chinese people by raping and enslaving the Chinese and some where killed by the Japanese soldiers during the occupation.
