The Twelfth Amendment of the United States Constitution states that when a presidential candidate doesn't receives the majority of the electoral votes, the decision will pass to the House of Representatives, where each state will have one vote.
The election of 1824 between John Quincy Adams , Andrew Jackson, Henry Clay and William Crawford is remembered as the only time in which according to The Twelfth Amendment since no one received the majority of electoral votes, the decision was passed to the House of Representatives. It was the only time when a presidential candidate (Andrew Jackson) that received most of the electoral votes was not elected president, because the majority of votes is required to win.
