Predict how you feel time, place, weather, and colors will play a key role in setting the Dystopian tone in 1984.

Respuesta :

Setting and tone/mood can be seen to go hand in hand, so to speak.  For instance, a scene of a story or poem that takes place in a field of flower on a bright and sunny day would contribute to a tone of happiness.  That said, the time _1984_ occurs is in the future for the characters of the novel.  The place is London, and the weather and color are, respectively, dreary and gray.   Because the future can never be known for sure, this uncertainty contributes to the dystopian tone.   Likewise, when one thinks about the miserable nature for people that would be caused by a dystopian society, bright and sunny are not what one might generally think.   Setting in _1984_ contributes to the tone of dystopia because when one pictures what a dystopia might look like, smoggy, foggy, and gray are probably what come to mind.

How you feel these elements will be relevant to setting the dystopian tone of "1984" is very personal and concerns your personal perception of the story. However, I can help you show you how these elements fit into the narrative and why they are important.

It is important for you to know that the term dystopia refers to a fictional story where a society is portrayed in a precarious and unhappy way. We can see that "1984" is a dystopia because the book shows a society completely dominated and manipulated by an oppressive and powerful leader.

In this case, the elements shown in the question above may be relevant to developing the dystopic tone as follows:

  • Time: time achieves the degree of evolution of the presented society. A modern society is more evolved and has a greater awareness of its precarious situation, unlike an older society. Thus, time can reinforce the characters' perception of their precarious society and the existence of a large resistance group.
  • Place: the place can reinforce the feeling of oppression that society experiences. More isolated places, such as an island, intensify this feeling. Real and more modern places like America can show how a society can change for the worse.
  • Weather: Dystopic societies tend to have a climate that reinforces the idea of sadness, lack of freedom and oppression. These feelings are reinforced with cold, humid climates.
  • Colors: Like the weather, colors should encourage the tone of oppression and sadness. In this case, gray, bluish and cold colors in general are used.
