Toby is camping in a broad, U-shaped valley. The area was most likely created by glacial erosion.
A U-shaped valley is a geological feature that has high and steep sides and a flat or circular valley base. U-shaped valleys have much wider bases than typical valleys and a well-defined U-shaped outline. U-shaped valleys are the result of glacial erosion (the shaping and cutting of the land below a moving glacier) which usually occurs in existing V-shaped valleys. Glacier erosion occurs when the temperature is very low and it flattens out the base of the V-shaped valley to form a U-shaped valley.
