They believed winning the war would be only a partial victory if the United States did not also overturn racial discrimination at home because of the African Americans participating in the war.

African Americans also wanted victory over racism within the US.

This idea of victory over racism and victory overseas was known as the Double V Campaign. The Double V Campaign was fueled by the increased participation of African American men in the US military. This included popular groups like the Tuskegee Airmen. Many African Americans felt it was unfair that they were segregated at home but were expected to defend their country during World War II.
