President Andrew Jackson supported the Indian Removal policy
because he thought this would be
beneficial to the Indians. By removing
them from their ancestral home and relocating them on federal lands, Jacks
thought that he was doing them a favor by saving them from the white man’s depredations. He added that by transferring them to federal
land, they would be able to live out their lives in peace and govern among
themselves. The relocation had
devastating effects on these tribes as many died of disease by being expelled
through force and conflicts erupted between settlers and Indians.
