Nast's drawings were instrumental in the downfall of Boss Tweed, the strong leader of Tammany Hall. Tweed and his colleagues - Peter Barr Sweeny, Richard B. Connolly, and Mayor A. Recently I decided to throw some of these people into behind bars ".
Nast intensified his attacks on Harper's pages. Tweed was arrested in 1873 and convicted. Tweed had tried to escape to Cuba and Spain. Officials at Vigo can identify fugitives using one of Nast's cartoons.
