The void was filled by the Dark Ages. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, there were barbarians that were threateing all around Europe and who did not wish for the progression of society and humanity. They only cared about pillaging and looting - hence the name dark ages.

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the void was filled by the Dark Ages. The epithet Dark Age is synonymous with the portrayal of the difficult times that were dominated by the barbarians following the disintegration of the political structure in Europe.

Further Explanation:

When the Rome was exposed to the rule of someone other than the Romans, it was destined to turn into ruins from which there was no possibility of rebuilding. The empire thrived on the shoulders of great warriors, rulers and kings but once the foreigners entered the city, the glory of the once powerful Roman Empire turned into a thing of the distant past. The rise of Christianity is often cited as one of the major factors that led to the weakening of the system from within and once the cracks appeared in the edifice of this glorious empire, its disintegration was nothing but inevitable. By declaring Christianity as a state religion, Constantine had undermined the belief of the people who saw the king as their God as opposed to the principles of Christianity. Yet another factor was the splitting of the empire into two parts which weakened it further.

After the arrival of the Germanic barbarians, there was no turning back for the situation kept getting worse. The Visigoths, Vandals, Angles, Saxons, Franks, Ostrogoths, and Lombards turned the Roman Empire into a heap of corpse and painted the grandiose of it with colors of blood, death and destruction. In 476 C.E. Romulus was the last of the Roman Emperor who was finally overthrown by Germanic leader Odoacer. This put an end to the Roman Empire.
