The human connection between Grendel and the kings men is rooted in language and communication. Grendel is continually frustrated because he is an intelligent creature and feels cannot communicate with those around him, i.e. his mother, other animals etc.
The most notable event is when Grendel is kicked out of Hart, he finds himself using human swear words to express his discontent.
