Fundamentalists did not support the teaching of the theory of evolution in schools.  In 1925, a law was passed in Tennessee prohibiting the teaching of evolution in public schools.  John Scopes, a teacher in Dayton, Tennessee, challenged the law and was arrested.  The conflict over the teaching of evolution in public schools was represented in the Scopes Trial.  He did end up losing and getting fined in the end.
