I believe this is an example of science influencing society. Research is based scientific information or data from individuals affected by a given condition. In this case a research on cancer caused by smoking shows a link between the two, such that smoking may cause cancer. Consideriing the fact that cancer is deadly and a dangerous condition, members of the society in this case the restaurants goes ahead to ban smoking in a bid to prevent the increasing rate of cancer associated with smoking.
