Cell organelles are subunits within cells with their own specialised functions. Eukaryotic cells have many of these organelles whereas prokaryotic cells don't contain organelles but rather bacterial sub-compartments that are thought to be precursors of organelles. The nucleus can be described as the 'brain' of the cell and contains genetic material and is responsible for controlling all activities of the cell and RNA transcription for cell reproduction. The mitochondrion can be described as the 'power plant' of the cell and is responsible for the production of energy through the oxidation of glucose substances to release ATP. Chloroplasts are found in plant cells and are responsible for trapping energy from the sunlight for photosynthesis. Lysosomes are typically found in animal cells and are responsible for the breakdown of large molecules such as proteins and polysaccharides and are therefore a kind of fuel processing organelle. Cytoplasm is not an organelle but rather a gel-like substance which encloses the organelles. Most cellular activities occur within the cytoplasm, such as glycolysis and cell division.
