Mujahideen forces caused serious casualties to the Soviet forces, and made the war very costly for the Soviet Union. In 1989 the Soviet Union withdrew its forces fromAfghanistan.

Arising around the 1970s, the mujahideen were Afghan fighters who sought to protect their lands against the Soviet invasion.  

Formed by a majority of Sunni Muslims and ethnic populations, the mujahideen started forming local troops that increased their power, fighting against the Soviet forces, who were forced to retreat in 1989.
