Number of students that can be accommodated in a van = 9
Number of students that needed to be put in the vans = 31
Number of vans required = 31/9
                                         = 3 4/9
So it can be seen that more than 3 vans are definitely required. Since there will be an excess of 4 children after accommodating 27 children's in 3 vans. So the fourth van will carry the remaining 4 students. The 5 seats of the last or the fourth van will remain empty. I hope the explanation that i have given is clear to you. You can do such problems easily if you understand the trick within the question. 4 vans will be required.

1 van can hold 9 students. Total are 31 students. So to find how many vans will be needed to fit these 31 students we will divide 31 by 9. Whatever is our answer will be the amount of vans. Lets do it:-

31 ÷ 9 = 3.44444.........

Since we cant take 3.44444....... vans we will round to 4 vans. There will be extra seats but all the students will fit. 

So, to fit 31 students we will need 4 vans.
