Order the fractions in least to greatest:

1. 5/9, 3/7, 2/3

2. 2/7, 1/8, 2/5

Order the fractions from greatest to least

1. 3/7, 4/9, 2/3

2. 4/5, 7/10, 1/12

3. 4/7, 3/5, 5/6

And finally…

Darius and Anita both took the same test. Darius answered 5/6 of the questions correctly, and Anita answered 6/7 correctly. Who got the higher score on the test?

(Also in case you don't know, all numbers that look like */* (but with numbers, not stars) are fractions)

Thanks!

To answer these questions, you can change the fractions into like-fractions and then compare. To do this, find the least common denominator of the set.

For instance, 1/3 and 3/4. Which is greater?
3: 3, 6, 9, 12...
4: 4, 8,12...
The least common denominator would be 12.
We know that to get to 12, you need to multiply 3(the denominator of 1/3) and 4(the denominator of 3/4). Now, we multiply the numerator by the same number.
1 x 4      4
-     - = ---
3 x 4    12

3 x 3      9
-     - = ---
4 x 3     12

Now we can compare. Which is greater, 4/12 or 9/12? Since the denominators are the same, we can look at the numerators. 9 is greater than 4, so 9/12(or 3/4) is greater than 4/12(or 1/3).

Hope this helped :)
