X-rays are electromagnetic waves with very short wavelength (0.01 to 10 nanometers) and very high frequency.
X-rays main property is that they are able to pass through many materials but they are reflected back by metals. For this reason, they can be used for luggage inspections: in fact, the X-rays are able to pass through the luggage, but they are reflected back if they met metals along their path, so they can be used to identify metal objects inside the luggages at the airport, for example.
