During replication of DNA, errors could occur. These errors could be an inversion, deletion or insertion. This is especially caused by the occasional shift of bases from their ‘keto’ to the rare ‘imino’ form causing polymerase to mismatch bases If these mistakes are not repaired by the DNA polymerase, they become permanent mutations.
