1. Mr. Auld found out what was going on, and at once forbade Mrs. Auld to instruct me further, telling her, among other things, that it was unlawful, as well as unsafe, to teach a slave to read.
Throughout the course of the existence of slavery in the USA, slaves were not allowed to learn how to read or write as it was an illegal matter. By terms of the law (the words unlawful and unsafe) Mr. Auld shows concern that Frederick will be punished for this actions.
2. He would at once become unmanageable, and of no value to his master.
Mr. Auld is showing concern in this sentence as he fears Frederick will become an unmanageable slave by acquiring ideas of rebellion and freedom from his readings, making him of no value to masters and thus condemning him to death.
