While, undoubtedly, the sources for the laws of the United States owe some debt to Christian religious texts of the past, the founding fathers looked to the philosophies of the Enlightenment, which sought to throw off the shackles of the dark ages brought about by the Christian zealotry of the past, to write the nations first set of laws. As such, the laws of the United States draw from the laws of previous generations and historically influential societies.
