After the war, and due to the possibility of climbing the social ladder in the United States, many Americans went from being working and middle class to being a new type of American Aristocracy known as "New Money".

These people were very concerned about they newly acquired social status, and worked hard to keep their wealth, social class and standing.

They were also frowned upon by the "Old Money" (people who had always belonged to the upper class), because the people from this new class did not know or respect the "Old Values". The "New Money" were considered to be tacky and lack good taste.
