Answer:

In the first half of the story, Leota is excited about her new friend, the lovely and charming Mrs. Pike because she is well known in the town. But in the second half, Leota has turned against Mrs. Pike. I think that Leota’s mind was changed by Mrs. Fletcher. Because Leota realized that Mrs. Pike was just a gossiper. Mrs. Pike was spreading the rumor that Mrs. Fletcher was pregnant before Mrs. Fletcher could spread the news herself. Leota was also turned against Mrs. Pike because Mrs. Pike found the wanted advertisement that promised a $500 reward inside of Leota’s magazine. So I guess that this is a major reason why Leota turns against Mrs. Pike. She is very upset that she did not discover the wanted ad before Mrs. Pike, especially because the magazine belonged to Leota. What this whole shift say about Leota is that she is a jealous person. Maybe she is jealous of Mrs. Pike who seems to have it all.

it says it in the story.
