The Appalachians mountains were tall and rugged mountains about millions of years. These mountains are formed due to the crushing of the two continental plates. But the height of these mountains has been significantly affected, as a result of which the mountains became gentle and their height has also reduced.  

This lowering of mountains usually takes place when the rate of collision reduces when the rate of erosion is more than the rate of uplift. In addition to this, factors such as wind and precipitation also plays an important role in reducing the height of the mountains.

These mountains are continuously eroded over a long period of time, due to which they resulted in lower and gentle mountains.
