First, we must describe the Kübler-Ross grief cycle. In the event of loss, the first stage is denial which involves feelings avoidance and shock. The second stage is anger which is led by frustration. In the first two stages, information and communication is important. Spiritual beliefs may not play a role in these stages yet. In the next stage which is depression, the person may feel helpless and emotional support is needed. Spiritual beliefs may impact the emotional support given to the person depending on what they believe in. The fourth stage is bargaining where the person will have feelings of “I will do everything just to get everything back” or similar. Lastly, the acceptance stage wherein the person will move on with his or her life. In these last two stages, guidance and direction is needed. Spiritual beliefs may play a role especially in believers as they seek a higher power or being for guidance and direction through prayers.
