We are tasked to solved whether the solutions being mixed generates a precipitates. We are given magnesium sulfate and calcium chloride as a solution to be mixed. Inorder to know if the solution generated contains a precipitate, we must first write its reaction equation.
Magnesium Sulfate= MgSO4= [tex] Mg^{2+} SO_{4} ^{2-}[/tex]
Calcium Chloride= CaCl = [tex] Ca^{2+} Cl ^{-}[/tex]
Reaction:
[tex] Mg^{2+} SO_{4} ^{2-}[/tex] + [tex] Ca^{2+} Cl ^{-}[/tex] --->[tex] Mg^{2+} Cl ^{-}[/tex] + [tex] Ca^{2+} SO_{4} ^{2-}[/tex]
Based on the solubility chart (It is available in the google),
[tex] SO_{4} ^{2-}[/tex] is only soluble if the ions attached are [tex] Sr^{2+} Ba^{2+} Pb^{2+} [/tex]
Therefore, Calcium Sulfate [tex] Ca^{2+} SO_{4} ^{2-}[/tex] precipitates.
