what we have to do is divide the 3/4 by 1/3.

in order to divide by a fraction, one multiplies by its inverse:

$\frac{3}{4} *3= \frac{9}{4} =2 \frac{1}{4}$

so it will be two pieces and 1/4 metere will be left.
