The signposts in To Kill A Mockingbird are used by the author to deliver some important messages and to create themes in the novel. The message that signposts gives to the main character is either the Words of the wiser, or it is a moment occurring again and again, or the realization moment by the protagonist (aha moment), it also helps the main character to ask some tough questions to himself. These signposts also helps the character to remember some memorable moment.
1. Words of the wiser- In Chapter 24, when Mrs. Merriweather is in discussion with Tom Robinson's family, we can find words of the wiser in that passage. We find Mrs. Merriweather advising the Maycomb Missionary Circle saying "Oh, well I always say forgive and forget, forgive and forget..." This is words of the wiser as wisdom is shared that one should forgive and forget.
2. Aha Moment- Aha moments in the novel is found when the main character realizes something. When Scout learns about the death of Tom Robinson she realizes that being a lady is not about dressing but also that being a lady it means to be strong and courageous also in tough times.
3. Contrasts and contradictions- In Chapter 24, when Aunt Alexandra learns about Tom Robinson's death we can find a contrast and contradiction moment because it was thought that Aunt Alexandra would be crying but in contrast, she was not. "I thought Aunt Alexandra was crying, but when she took her hands away from her face, she was not. She looked weary..." This is a contradictory moment also because at the beginning of the story we see Aunt Alexandra acting very stuck-up but now she is seen having compassion on people. The author used this signpost to create the theme that someone can change through the story.
4. Memory Moment- "....the guards called to him to stop. They fired a few shots in the air, then to kill.." This creates a memorable moment. When Atticus came home with this news he was recalled of what happened and hence creates a memorable moment in the novel.
