CRISPR is mechanism tapped and modified from bacterial defense mechanism to form a tool to edit DNA in a genome. CRISPR is composed of palindromic sequences interspersed with foreign spacer DNA. The spacer DNA is transcribed into crRNA that is guided by a tracrRNA to the invading helical foreign DNA. The tracrRNA recruits Cas9 protein which helps cut the exogenous DNA.
