I think it is a fancy term for a function such as f(x)=x+9 or f(x)=x^93+x^x+4/x+4x/2
it is a  machine because it takes in something and spits something out
a function is for every input (x) there is one output so you put a term in the x after the f and sbustitue the number for every x you see so
f(x)=x+9
so if you have f(3) thhen that equals f(3)=3+9=12

In mathematics, a function is a relation in which each x-term corresponds to exactly one y-term.

Let me show you an example.

{(7,15) . (7,17) (8,19) (28,21)}

In the relation shown above, this would not represent a function. This is because the x-term 7 corresponds to two different y-terms.
