The event in the Jefferson presidency that changed the balance of power in American government was the case, Marbury vs. Madison. This case was the first time that the Supreme Court ruled that they could essentially overrule the presidency or congress if they felt their decisions or bills were unconstitutional. This brought about another set of checks and balances to the American government.
