At its peak, this empire manged to extend across the Middle East, east to Persia, north to the Caucasus Mountains, along the coast of North Africa, and Spain in Europe as its westernmost part. The empire came to an end when the Mongols started their expansion and destroyed the Islamic Caliphates.
