Jimmy ran 3 miles west from home and then turned north and jogged 4 miles. in a straight line, how far is jimmy from home?
a.3.5 miles
b.4 miles
c.5 miles
d.7 miles

Respuesta :

if u were to draw this out, u would have the shape of a right triangle....with the legs being 3 miles and 4 miles......and a straight line would be the hypotenuse. So we use the pythagorean theorem.

a^2 + b^2 = c^2
3^2 + 4^2 = c^2
9 + 16 = c^2
25 = c^2
sqrt 25 = c
5 = c

so Jimmy is 5 miles from home

The straight line is the diagonal of the triangle formed, which is the hypotenus,. Hence, Jimmy's distance from home is 5 miles

Recall :

Hypotenus² = adjacent² + opposite²

Hence,

Distance² = 3² + 4²

Distance² = 9 + 16

Distance² = 25

Distance = √25 = 5

Hence, Jimmy's distance from home would be 5 miles.
