of tissues to cure diseases.
Gene therapy is a procedure involving the introduction of foreign genes into a host's cells or tissues in order to replace a faulty gene or make proteins that would be beneficial to the body at large.
There are two types of gene therapy:
- Somatic gene therapy: the transfer of foreign DNA into somatic cells - cells that have nothing to do with sperm and eggs.
- Germline gene therapy: transfer of foreign DNA into germ cells - cells that have to do with sperm/eggs.
Hence, the procedure holds the potential to cure heritable and non-heritable diseases such as cancer, hemophilia, diabetes, and HIV/AIDS.
In other words, gene therapy can be used to introduce foreign DNA into cells of tissues to cure diseases.
