The amount of cod available in the New England fishing waters began to decline which led to a rise in unemployment for people who fished and worked in fields related to the cod fishing industry in the New England area in the late 1980's. Today, the number of cod fishermen are allowed to catch is regulated by the government, most cod in US grocery stores is imported.
