After the results came in of the presidential election of 1876, disputes began to arise, as some citizens were dubious of the results that came from southern states such as South Carolina, Florida and Louisiana. The so called "Compromise of 1877" was a mediation that occurred between members of the Republican Party with Democrats.

The Democrats agreed to accept the victory of the Republican candidate, Rutherford Hayes, in exchange of some compromises from the Republicans. These compromises meant the withdraw of all the federal troops from the Southern States.  As a result, the Democrats were the party with almost total control over the South, and this meant the end of the Reconstruction Era, the period after the Civil War, where the southern states were the ones that struggled the most to rebuild themselves in the new era of freedom for all.
