First of all, it is true that a syllable is a sound unit.

B: I am surprised how often they are! for example "verboten" - German for "forbidden"
C: meanings change, for example take "cool" - i believe that it used to mean only "cold"
D: this is the opposite: formal and colloquial are the opposites of each other
