This would be diction. Diction, by definition, the choice and use of words and phrases in a speech or writing. The authors diction determines the tone or mood of the story. For example, if the author described something as being depressing or something like that, it would be a lot more effective and more intense than just sad. I couldn't really come up with a better example than that lol but I hope this helps!
