South African student protest of 1976 was the Soweto Uprising marked by the protest and demonstration led by the Black students of South Africa. Students from several School begun to protest against the introduction of Afrikaans as the medium of conversation in the local schools of Africa. Students preferred English over Afrikaans language as it was the commonly used dialectal in the country. It is assessed that around 20,000 took part in the protest and met a fierce repel by the police.  

The protest started after on the morning of 16th June 1976, when around 10 -20 thousand students walked out of their schools and started protesting against the implementation of the medium of learning. The protest was planned by Soweto Students “Representative Council Action Committee” and though students were not aware of the protest but they took active participation in the protest. According to the estimation around 700 students were killed in the brutal suppression of the protest by the officials.
