The delegates of the Constitutional Convention had many things in
common, despite being from different states and different sections of
the country. They knew that the nation needed a stronger central
government, though they were not willing to give up the sovereignty and
autonomy of their states. They also wanted peace with the other states.
They wanted a representative government that was divided into
executive, legislative, and judicial branches. They also wanted a
government that was representative of the will of the people but would
be structured in such a way that it would not collapse into mob rule.
