South Africa was the biggest gold producer in the world for many years until 2006. The peak occurred in 1970 and no country has ever surpassed it yet. However, gold production in South Africa had declined due to some factors like reduction of gold deposits in the country and lack of technology. Gold production is spread all over the world, with China on top at 15%, Asia 22%, Central and South America 17%, North America 15%, Russia at 14%. The latest record shows Africa was able to contribute only 20% of the world’s gold production.
