Method 1 is just straight multiplication, with the equation [tex] \frac{3}{1} * \frac{3}{4} [/tex] which then equals [tex] \frac{9}{4} [/tex]

Method 2 is turning 3 into an improper fraction of [tex] \frac{12}{4} [/tex] and multiplying it by [tex] \frac{3}{4} [/tex]. This is then equal to [tex] \frac{36}{16} [/tex]. You then reduce this to [tex] \frac{9}{4} [/tex] by dividing the top and bottom units by 4.
