The Middle Colonies comprised of four of the thirteen colonies in British America, namely Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. Ethnical and religious diversity was most evident the Middle Colonies compared with the other British Colonies in North America.
The social values important to them included high tolerance for religious and ethnic diversities. The Middle Colonies were also heavily involved with Irish immigration. Despite their religious and ethnic tolerance, there was a need to take indentured servants (mostly young whites initially) because of short labor supply. By mid-18th century, 12% of New York's population consisted of African American slaves.
