Many French people opposed the return of the monarchy. Most of those who opposed the monarchy agreed with the principles of the Enlightenment. The philosophers of the Enlightenment believed in the right of people to chose their own leaders. Moreover, they believed that all people should be equal, and that the privileges of the monarchy went against people's natural rights. The French Revolution fought to uphold these values. Therefore, when the monarchy wanted to return, many people were already convinced of the new values and principles and disliked the idea of going back to an old and outdated regime.
