It makes it sound like a fun tradition that everyone participates in like a holiday and then the ending is such a surprise because the beginning of the story does not give you the impression that it will end in murder. Hope i helpedd

Jackson's reason behind his behaviour of waiting until the end of the story to reveal the conflict, may have something to do with a tendecy to drive the reader into a dramatic plot twist that wasn't at all expected, a sudden tone change, as the lottery wasn't seen as something that could be wrong, was accepeted and had a high participation from people. So this is all a sense of town's traditions manipulation.
