To Germany, it appeared that Britain would fall sooner or later. However, the Battle of Britain witnessed the successful defense by the Royal Air Force that protected the island against the continuous and destructive bombings and a raid by the corresponding German Luftwaffe. Earlier Poland and France had quickly fallen with the Blitzkrieg tactics.
The unsuccess in destroying the Royal Army prevented the invasion by German ground forces into English territories. The military command wanted to lay siege to Britain in order to wear it down. Since England remained strong and was unwilling to give up, it became the crucial point for Hitler's turning to the East front that previously had been avoided to prevent additional fronts to be targeted. Germany's unsuccessful attack probed that England would challenge the supremacy on air.
