Jefferson initially said that Native Americans were capable of assimilating to American culture. However, some of his private letters note that he was in agreement with the forced removal of the Native Americans to the lands west of the Mississippi. Jackson was the one credited with the removal of Native Americans to these parts due to the Indian Removal Act. However, he was carrying out a plan that Jefferson initiated.

The policy of Thomas Jefferson was to never remove native Americans whereas Andrew Jackson’s policy was to negotiate with native Americans for removal to federal territory.

Further Explanation:

Thomas Jefferson was always of a view that Native American people were as equal as whiteman.  He never removed any native Indian Americans but also had a view that Lands of Indians were destined to be taken over from White people. While serving as the President of United States, Jefferson always had a view that Americans need to respect Brotherhood and trade with native Americans and he also believed that the making them adopt style of European culture and also modes of living will allow them quickly in order to progress their style of living. He always thought that Indians had Spare lands and they would willingly exchange those lands in return of food or money. On the other hand, President Andrew Jackson came up with Indian Removal Act in 1830 and this law gave access to the President to do negotiation with native American tribes for their removal from ancestral lands and in exchange they would get the part of federal territory which was a part of west Mississippi river. The native Americans strongly opposed this act but this act got the support of southern and northeastern population. The Native Americans and Cherokees worked together to stop this relocation but all their efforts were unsuccessful.
